Car Insurance Overview

Car Accident Lawyers Lake Charles: Understanding Insurance

Louisiana Motor Vehicle Insurance Claim Attorneys

As a driver, you are required by Louisiana state law to have a minimum amount of liability coverage to pay for damages to others if you cause an accident. You can purchase more auto insurance coverage if you wish; this will protect you from greater loss if you are found responsible for causing a car accident, or the other driver is underinsured or uninsured.

Car accident coverage and claim attorneys at Broussard & Hart, L.L.C., have handled many large and complex injury and fatal crash claims. We can help you understand the type of insurance coverage you have and how to maximize the protection it provides. Liability Insurance

When you purchase this type of protection it only pays for claims or judgments against you if you are found negligent in car crashes, motorcycle accidents and other collisions. The minimum amount required to satisfy Louisiana’s Financial Responsibility law is commonly called 10/20 insurance. This means the policy must provide coverage of:

  • Ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for bodily injury to or the death of a person in any single accident
  • Twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) for bodily injury to or the death of two or more people in a single accident
  • Ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for property damage for others in the accident

UIM/UM Insurance

This type of voluntary coverage is used to protect yourself if you are injured in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. You can purchase coverage known as "uninsured / underinsured motorist benefits." Whether the amount of your damages exceeds the negligent person's coverage limits or they drove without insurance in violation of the law, you can make a claim under this coverage from your own company. UIM/UM claims are often denied by insurers, but we can help you fight for the compensation you have paid for. In Louisiana, UIM/UM coverage is required by law, unless you waive that coverage in writing.

Medical Pay or Personal Injury Protection

To cover your medical bills related to an auto crash, you may want to voluntarily purchase additional protection called "medical payments." Its intent is to pay for the medical needs of a driver or passengers. However, it only covers those who are in the insured car. Payments for medical bills under this coverage will be made regardless of who is at fault.

Collision Insurance

Collision coverage is another type of voluntary car insurance. It covers repairs to or replacement of your vehicle after an accident, regardless who is at fault. This allows you to pay for repairs to your vehicle if you are at fault, or if your car is damaged by someone who has no insurance or who flees the scene. There is usually a deductible.
