If you discover your home is on fire, quick action is imperative to save lives and property.
Get Everyone Out
- Be sure everyone is out of the house.
- Don't stop to call the Fire Department.
- If a door feels hot, do not open it. Use another exit.
- If the lower levels are burning and you must use the chain ladder, put towels or sheets under the door to keep smoke out, giving you a little extra time to escape.
- If you must go down stairs, stay close to the wall or bannister to avoid becoming disoriented and put wet cloths over your mouth and nose to aid breathing.
Call The Fire Department
- Call the Fire Department from a neighbor's house.
- Give the Fire Department complete directions and tell them if anyone has been injured or may still be in the burning structure.
Fighting The Fire Yourself
- If the fire is very small and confined to a small area, you may try to put it out using a fire extinguisher.
- Be sure you have an unobstructed escape route.
- Stand at least 6 to 8 feet away from the fire.
- Aim the extinguisher at the base of the flames and spray back and forth to put out the flames.
- Continue spraying after the flames have died down to completely extinguish any embers.
- Have the Fire Department inspect the area to be sure nothing is burning inside walls or ceilings.
